Fractional art ownership in Singapore

You can be an art collector with just S$1,000

  • What is fractional art ownership?

Fractional art ownership is the shared ownership of an artwork by a group of people.

  • How does fractional art ownership work?

The fractionalized artwork is kept and maintained by the company. You can buy and sell shares in the fractionalized artwork, or hold till the physical artwork is sold.

  • Who is suitable for fractional art ownership?

Fractional art ownership is an option if you

    • are interested in collecting art but have a limited budget
    • want to include art as an alternative investment in your portfolio
    • do not want to store and manage artworks on your own
  • Why fractional art ownership?

    Fractional art ownership gives you

    • access to high value artworks which would otherwise be unaffordable
    • diversification across multiple artworks instead of a single artwork with the same budget
    • liquidity that is unlocked from selling shares instead of the physical artwork
  • Where can you find fractional art ownership in Singapore?

We Are Art Collectors (WAAC) offers the first fractional art ownership in Singapore focused on local art.

How to be a fractional art collector

  • Only for members

You must be a member before you can participate in WAAC's fractional art ownership. Members are known as Collectors and membership is lifetime for a one time fee of S$1,000.

  • Fractional art ownership for only S$1,000

At WAAC, the ownership of an artwork is divided into lots of S$1,000.

For example, an artwork valued at S$10,00 during Initial Offering will be fractionalized into lots of 10 with each lot at S$1,000. You can buy 1 lot for S$1,000 and own 10% of this fractionalized artwork.

  • How to buy

You can buy lots during Initial Offering when the fractionalized artwork is first presented to Collectors, or subsequently as a Lot Trade when a Lot Owner sell their lots.

For example, you can buy one lot at S$1,000 during Initial Offering. After Initial Offering, you can buy one lot from the Lot Owner as a Lot Trade at a price that is agreed by both parties (for example at S$2,000).

  • How to sell

As a Lot Owner, you can sell your lots to other Collectors as a Lot Trade. Or you can hold until the physical artwork is sold by WAAC to a third party during Final Sales and receive your share of the proceeds.

For example, you can sell one lot to another Collector as a Lot Trade at a price that is agreed by both parties (for example at $2,000). Or receive a share of the proceeds during Final Sales (for example $2,000 for 10% ownership of an artwork sold for S$20,000).

  • Storage, maintenance and marketing

The fractionalized artworks will be stored with adequate security, covered with required insurance and their condition carefully maintained.

At WAAC, art is meant for the walls, not for the store. The fractionalized artworks will be displayed for viewing and you can show your collection to your family and friends.

Marketing and promotional efforts will also be carried out to increase the future value of the fractionalized artworks.

  • Fees and charges

    • Buyers Premium at 10% per lot for purchases of lots at Initial Offering or Lot Trade
    • Sellers Commission at 20% per lot for sales of lots at Lot Trade or Final Sales
    • Storage, maintenance, insurance and marketing fees at S$100 per lot for purchases of lots at Initial Offering or Lot Trade

Before you start

  • Patience is required

At WAAC, fractionalized artworks are expected to be held for 5-8 years before Final Sales can occur.

  • Fractional art ownership is not for everyone

It is not suitable for those who

    • want to view and enjoy artworks at home
    • want quick and promised returns
    • have high liquidity needs
    • want to have control over the artwork
    • cannot afford the yearly storage and maintenance fees
    • do not like art
  • Creating a legacy

At WAAC, fractional art ownership is for collectors who believe in preserving the heritage of Singapore art, in helping Singapore artists make their mark, in creating legacies for future generations in Singapore.

Why art?

  • Your personal taste

Art allows you to connect with your inner self, appreciate beauty, and express your personal taste.

  • Reflection of your identity

Art is a reflection of your identity through the artworks you choose.

  • Be part of cultural and historical significance

Art collection allows you to invest in something that holds cultural and historical significance, especially local art that reflects Singapore.

We support local

  • Who is WAAC?

WAAC is founded by Sok Leng, owner of ARTualize, an art gallery in Singapore focused on Singapore artists. She is passionate about supporting local art.

From her interactions at the gallery, Sok Leng realized that more and more young Singaporeans are interested in collecting art, especially local art, but they are held back by small budgets and lack of knowledge. Most do not know where and how to start. Fractional art ownership will enable them to take their first step in art collection easily and affordably.

With more art collectors, Sok Leng hopes that the Singapore art market will become more vibrant and viable for the next generation of local artists.

  • How does WAAC curate the artworks?

At this moment, WAAC will focus on artworks by second generation Singapore artists. These artists are an important part of Singapore's art history and most are advanced in their years or no longer with us. Their works are slowly gaining recognition and prices are still reasonable.

  • Where does WAAC source the artworks?

WAAC will source for suitable artworks directly from the artists or late artists' families. Artworks can also be sourced from collectors and galleries.

  • How does WAAC sell the artworks?

WAAC will monitor the market and work closely with collectors, galleries and auction houses to sell the fractionalized artworks.

  • How does WAAC protect your interest?

    1. WAAC will own at least 20% of every fractionalized artwork until it is sold.
    2. Fractionalized artworks will be displayed for viewing by Collectors.
    3. Annual audits will be conducted by third party auditors.
    4. Fractional art ownership will be governed by legal agreements.
    5. WAAC will negotiate for fair deals when sourcing and selling the artworks.
  • How does WAAC contribute to the art community?

As an individual collector, there is a limit to what you can do.

As a group of collectors, WAAC has the financial ability and reputational clout to market and promote our Singapore artists to a bigger stage. Efforts will also be made to nurture young artists and encourage art appreciation in Singapore.
